Aerofoil Flying Boats

The aerofoil flying boats were an attempt to combine the efficiency of ground-effect with long range and speed. Hovercraft were impractical for long-distance travel.  Lippisch performed wind-tunnel tests on low aspect-ratio in ground effect. He found that they showed favorable characteristics.

At the Collins Hydrodynamic Laboratory they built a two-place ramwing aircraft, the X-112. Clayton Lander test flew the X-112 during the fall of 1963.

In 1966, Lippisch founded the Lippisch Research Corporation, and built the X-113 A Aerofoil Boat with the Rhein-Flugzeugbau Company.
